Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

I use a blend of therapeutic approaches based on my clients’ individualized needs, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.  This is a type of therapy that helps individuals who both want to make changes and also might not be fully ready to make changes, and need an extra push – it teaches us to balance thinking and feeling so that we can make healthy, effective decisions.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was originally developed for high-risk individuals, including those who:

  • Struggle to manage emotions
  • Don’t have the skills to cope with stress
  • Self-harm
  • Eating disorders
  • Low self-esteem
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Have difficulty building and maintaining healthy relationships
  • Have difficulty accepting reality as it is
  • Struggle with balancing thinking and feeling
  • Have difficulty with focus and task completion

I work closely with these populations, and have also found throughout my years of practice that everyone can benefit from DBT skills.  This is why I incorporate DBT and skills development into the treatment plans of the majority of my clients.

DBT includes four modules and I teach valuable life skills in these areas:

  • Mindfulness
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

We all can use a little help sometimes with our relationships, managing stress and our emotions, and with slowing down and thinking more clearly. Call today for your free, fifteen minute telephone consultation!
